Calling all Durian lovers! Creamy Durian Seafood @ Just Seafood, Sunway Giza review

18 April 2018

Hello guys! Any Durian obsessed kawans reading this? I know this may sound a little weird but the other day I was at Just Seafood, Sunway Giza and I got to try their latest menu item which is their Creamy Durian Seafood! YES GUYS!! I ate Durian cooked with Seafood!!!

Okay, you guys must be thinking "nice meh???" ಠ_ಠ

Well, few days before the food tasting session I was thinking, it's durian + seafood, what if it tastes weird?? But you know what, I convinced myself that if I don't try this, I'll never know if I like it or not!

On the day I was about to try this interesting combination, I mentally braced myself for the challenge (but to be honest, I was also super excited la) and surprisingly....

It was actually pretty good leh!!

Like, no regrets.

Now you have three choices to choose from! If you're interested to know what me and my picky tastebuds think of this combination, please keep on reading. If you love durian and you're up for something interesting and you're too lazy to read anymore, just head straight to Just Seafood @ Sunway Giza now to try it for yourself! Then let me know if you like it or not!! If you don't like durian then...uhm...check out my other blogposts??? Hahaha just kidding! Just Seafood also serves seafood cooked in different flavours. Scroll down to see what other flavours they serve!

Before I hop into my review, here's how the shop looks like. It's a corner shop at Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara. If you're there during the night you would be able to spot it very easily as all the lights will be lit up. (quite pretty actually!) I've personally passed by the place many times but has yet to try their food until couple days ago. The restaurant always seemed packed so if you're planning to visit perhaps you'd want to call to make a reservation first. I'll include their phone number at the end of my post!

Honestly, I'd recommend this to anyone that eats durian and seafood! For this dish, expect a creamy slightly sweet and savoury taste in the sauce. The durian flavour is not very strong but you can definitely still taste it, because it wasn't too strong, you could still taste the freshness/sweetness from the seafood. This dish does contain cheese but for some reason I couldn't really taste the cheese in it. Though it is possible that the mild savoury taste is coming from the cheese. Other than seafood there were also some carrots and sweet corn tossed together in this creamy durian sauce. I think including some vegetables were a good choice as you might feel a little jelak from just eating seafood alone. I didn't fancy comb corn too much so I passed on that but carrot went pretty well with this sauce.

By the way, I really recommend eating their fried man tou (tiny fried buns), you can eat it with the sauce or eat 'em alone, it tastes so good! One last tip is to eat it when it's still warm!! We spent so much time taking photos of the dish, by the time we were ready to eat, it was already at borderline room temperature but it still tasted good. Can you imagine how much better it'll taste if it was still hot?

We all know that durians are seasonal fruits. In order to assure the quality of the dish, Just Seafood uses Monthong Durians from Thailand as this particular type of durian is more easily accessible and it also has a milder odour to it. Furthermore, the recipe calls for durians with a mild odour just so it doesn't overpower the taste of the seafood so Monthong durians fit the bill perfectly.

I've heard and tried a few Durian twists on different food/mainly desserts. However, a mixed seafood dish with durian and cheese sauce? This is certainly the first time I've heard of one and it's not an easy dish to nail! The thing with having a chef to be boyfriend is that you kinda learn a thing or two about culinary haha. So being able to 'adjust' the sauce to match a variety of seafood(each having it's own unique flavour) + vegetables, is not an easy task and surprisingly all it took Just Seafood was two attempts to present this yummy dish! The sauce tasted great with all the prawns/crab/mussels I had!

Level of fun? 10/10. Bring your best waisekmao kawans(24/7 hungry buddies) and eat some seafood! If you have a gang of durian kakis, time to jio them out and challenge them to prove their love for durian with this Creamy Durian Seafood dish! The restaurant provides disposable gloves for those afraid of getting their hands dirty but if you want to have the 100% full experience of eating this, just eat with your bare hands!

The seafood we had were fresh. I know that the seafood is served accordingly to weight but size does matter. I would rather eat 10 big prawns than 15 small prawns, you get what I mean? Thankfully, at Just Seafood, they were very generous with their mussels and there were a few large crab claws along with quite a number of large prawns and medium sized prawns too! So as far as the quality goes, I'll rate this a 8.5/10.

[ Price ]
Their Creamy Durian Seafood will be the same price as their Butter Cream Milk/ Golden Salted Egg seafood. The dish is not on their menu yet but they should be releasing a new menu with it real soon! I'm rating the price as 7.5 because while it is a little pricey in figures, you really get what you pay. The quality of the seafood, the generous amount of mussels, and the interesting cooking styles you get to choose from (Creamy Durian, Butter Cream Milk, Salted Egg Yolk, Original Cajun Style, and Nasi Lemak Cajun). Moreover usually you would go for this in a group so the cost is also split among several people which makes it alright.

Considering all of this, plus seafood in Malaysia was never cheap to begin with, I think the pricing here is pretty fair and I'm not sure if you guys would agree with me on this but I personally think that for what you get, I would actually consider this affordable. By the way, you can also add on different types of seafood that is not included in the set. Top up RM49 and you'll get a 400g lobster leh. I'm going for that ok!

Their sides and mains on the other hand does seem a little pricey to me. I have not ordered any of it to try so I'll only be able to give my two cents after seeing the portion and tasting 'em.

Click to enlarge. Here are more photos of what's on their menu. (photo from Just Seafood's FB)

Another photo taken off Just Seafood's Facebook. A little off topic but here's a dish I'm interested to try on my future visit!! It's their lobster nasi lemak and they have other alternatives too like large tiger prawn nasi lemak, giant fresh water prawn nasi lemak, and big prawns nasi lemak!

By the way, after trying Just Seafood's Creamy Durian Seafood, the boss also let us try one of their bestsellers which is their Golden Salted Egg flavour. Compared to the creamy durian seafood, this felt much heavier. Obviously if you love salted egg dishes, you will LOVE this. Although I'm not a big fan of salted egg (love fried salted egg calamari tho), I still ate quite a lot of this so it's safe to say that this was pretty good!

PS. Did you notice that while most seafood restaurants serving seafood in this concept would normally serve you your seafood in a plastic bag? I like how Just Seafood does so using a metal bowl instead. Basically, I just personally prefer having hot dishes served using metal instead of plastic la.

Look at that juicy big prawn at the bottom left! One thing about visiting Just Seafood with a large group is that you guys could order a few flavours to try! It'll be interesting and delicious too!

That is all for my post today, I hope this review is helpful! Really glad that Racheal invited me over for this haha if not I probably would've never known that durian + seafood would actually click together! If you're planning to try this Creamy Durian Seafood or if you have already tried it, let me know what you think!! :D

Thanks for reading and until next time!

  1. I really want to try that now. I was actually watching a show and it talked about durian with seafood and how to make it and it sounded really interesting. Personally I love cooking and trying new things out and that sounds like something that I can do. I personally love durian but I know a lot of my American friends don’t like the smell or texture, so when they do make it into a sauce and it tastes delicious then that would be something worth trying.

    1. Hi Kelly! I'm so sorry I didn't see your comment until now!! And yess! I think durian's really a hit or miss for most people haha! Even for locals I know quite a few friends whom absolutely hates durian hahaha. I was actually quite surprised how they managed to fuse the durian savoury taste in a sauce without ruining the dish too!! I'm not sure if this is still on the menu but I do hope you get to try it one day :D
